IDEX Manufacturing Process Engineer – Optical Coatings in Albuquerque, New Mexico

The Manufacturing Process Engineer leads engineering support for CVI’s manufacturing and fabrication of optical coatings. Job responsibilities include development of new processes as well as support of existing production demand.


Leads engineering support for the Optical Coatings department, including and not limited to:

  • Responds promptly and proficiently to operations and production support requests

  • Provides engineering guidance for coating tooling and equipment operation and maintenance

  • Documents process maps for standard coating processes

  • Determines critical parameters for process control given end objectives and requirements

  • Identifies, recommends and drives process capability improvements

  • Develops, initiates, and trains technicians to support new coating processes

  • Teams with sales, production, and other engineering resources to respond to new and modified coating design requests

  • Initiates and leads root cause investigations and corrective actions

  • Identify project requirements, including raw material, human and equipment resources and create project timelines for new and under-developed processes

  • Clearly communicates schedule, technical, budgetary status and risks internally and externally


  • Superb creativity and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams to implement practical solutions to challenging problems.

  • Communicate effectively through email, presentations and technical documents.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, or equivalent field.

  • 5+ years’ experience in the field of manufacturing process engineering preferred.

  • Working proficiency in Solidworks or other 3D CAD system

  • Utilize statistical software for documentation and analysis

  • Read and understand a variety of job-related instructions and documents, including engineering drawings

  • Statistical data collection, analysis, and solution implementation experience

  • Six Sigma Green or Black belt preferred

  • Process flow, FMEA, and/or control plan development experience preferred


  • Operate computerized equipment and perform calculations

  • Bend as is necessary for sitting, using computers, using the telephone, and computer mouse

  • Demonstrate eye-hand coordination

  • Operate testing and measuring equipment

  • Bend as is necessary for lifting from waist to operate testing equipment

  • Apply force to adjust and operate testing equipment, turn knobs and cranks

  • Manipulate fragile parts into and out of equipment to measure size and shape

  • Grasp objects in order to turn, wipe, adjust instrumentation and safely use sharp instruments

  • Twist and turn wrists and forearms to perform inspection of optics and to operate testing equipment and computer

  • Bend at the neck to perform inspection and testing of optics and related equipment


  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

This job position requires compliance with ITAR Regulations. Therefore, all employees working in this capacity must meet citizenship status. Per the Advanced Thin Films Export Controls Policy and Procedure, the employee must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident.
