IDEX Optical Engineer – Design, Development, and Test in Albuquerque, New Mexico

The Optical Engineer designs and tests optical elements and systems to support CVI’s existing business and new product development. Evaluates optical design feasibility as a function of requirements and specifications, tolerances, and manufacturing processes. Tests component and assembly optical performance using optical test equipment including, but not limited to, interferometry, ellipsometry, polarimetry, spectrophotometry and custom tests. Discusses technical requirements and optical solutions with customers. Serves as a subject matter expert in the areas of optical components, thin film coatings, optical testing and metrology.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Including but not limited to:

  • Generate optical system and components specifications from system-level performance requirements.

  • Develop design solutions for optical components and systems to meet or exceed product specifications.

  • Provide accurate fabrication and test requirements and support design and test verification.

  • Integrate optical and mechanical designs using simulation tools (such as Zemax and SolidWorks).

  • Interface with optomechanical and mechanical engineers to define tooling and mounting.

  • Team with CVI Sales, Production, Quality, Planning to respond to new and modified product design requests.

  • Lead design and development projects using CVI’s production approval process for new optical component and system projects as assigned.

  • Interface with customers to understand their needs and to present solutions and results.

  • Identify, recommend, and drive process capability improvements.

  • Lead project meetings and provides input and updates. Creates effective technical reports and presentations.

PROFESSIONAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in optics, optical engineering, or equivalent field.

  • Theoretical and practical understanding of geometrical optics, aberration theory, interference, lasers, and thin film coatings.

  • Working proficiency in Zemax, CodeV, or other optical design simulation software.

  • Ability to read, understand, and apply a variety of job-related instructions and documents, including engineering drawings.

  • Experience with scientific computing and data analysis tools such as MATLAB or Python.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks both of similar and varying priority.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree or higher in optics, optical engineering, or equivalent field or 5+ years’ experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with New Product Development (NPD) stage gate processes, design of experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and project planning.

  • Statistical data collection, analysis, and solution implementation experience.

  • Project management experience.

PHYSICAL CLASSIFICATION:

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Ability to:

  • Bend as is necessary for sitting, using computers, using the telephone, and computer mouse

  • Demonstrate eye-hand coordination

  • Operate testing and measuring equipment

  • Bend as is necessary for lifting from waist to operate testing equipment

  • Apply force to adjust and operate testing equipment, turn knobs and cranks

  • Manipulate fragile parts into and out of equipment to measure size and shape

  • Grasp objects in order to turn, wipe, adjust instrumentation and safely use sharp instruments

  • Twist and turn wrists and forearms to perform inspection of optics and to operate testing equipment and computer

  • Bend at the neck to perform inspection and testing of optics and related equipment

  • Perform legible written communication.

  • Ability to work in a Class 1000 clean room environment wearing appropriate PPE.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

This position requires compliance with ITAR Regulations; this person must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident.
