The R&D Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for leading the design and validation of new products, as well as providing process improvement support for current products. The successful candidate for this role will be highly skilled in cross-departmental communication and documenting engineering processes at all stages of the product life cycle from design to manufacturing.


  • Lead engineering efforts pertaining to the design of precision products by demonstrated experience with New Product Development (NPD) stage gate processes, design of experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and project planning, as examples.

  • Hands-on experience with design of new products and sustaining of existing products.

  • Experience in communicating directly with customers to identify product design needs to accelerate desired solutions.

  • Incorporation of Design for Manufacturability and Design for Cost into design processes.

  • Experience successfully completing DFMEA’s.

  • Working knowledge of FEA (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, etc.).

  • Experienced in design failure root cause investigations.

  • Ability to generate complete engineering fabrication documentation & bill of materials.

  • Support mechanical designs through manufacturing, assembly and test.

  • Working within a budget to deliver safe and efficient products on time.

  • Developing design prototypes.

  • Attending meetings and providing input and updates.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks both of similar and varying priority.

  • Creation of technical reports and presentations.

  • Networking and collaborating with other engineers and professionals.

  • Working knowledge of GD&T per ISO standards.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • B.S. in an engineering or scientific field.

  • 5+ years’ experience in design engineering role.

  • Fluent in use of mechanical CAD software such as SolidWorks.


  • Mechanical engineering and/or process engineering background.

  • Experience with optical fabrication.

  • Hands on process development background.


Perform sedentary work at a workstation and demonstrate upper body mobility to lift objects of 10 lb. frequently and 30 lb. occasionally.

Ability to:

  • Manipulate optics into and out of fixtures, tools and carriers.

  • Efficiently transport optics and mechanical components and subsystems to and from the necessary departments.

  • Lift optics for inspecting, cleaning, testing and packaging (up to 20 lb.).

  • Bend as is necessary for lifting from waist, knees, and neck to operate related equipment.

  • Perform legible written communication.
