Director of Product Engineering & Quality

POSITION LOCATION:

Denver, CO

REPORTS TO:

GM/President of Band-It

POSITION SUMMARY:

Leads a new and sustaining product engineering team of seven engineers responsible to support our growth goals by understanding our customer’s application and develop innovative next generation products to solve customer problems. They are responsible for the research, design and management of development projects related to industrial clamps and installation tools. Lead the team in looking at ways to become more competitive by taking cost out of our solutions which will include understanding the manufacturing process and evaluating new materials. This person will also be responsible for the quality team of six employees who drive continuous improvement through the elimination of defects that create waste and may result in customer disruption and dissatisfaction. The person is also responsible to ensure we maintain key certifications and drive product quality throughout the organization and suppliers.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to champion the team’s response to customer problems, including containment, customer interaction, root cause analysis, and the implementation of effective permanent corrective actions

  • Capable of driving innovation and new product development, estimating development costs and monitor assigned projects through all phases of development

  • Develops and maintains control documentation including drawings, specifications and procedures.

  • Ensures the successful use of the engineering change process (ECR) and the new product development tollgate process. Owns these processes for the organization and leads any continuous improvement to make us more efficient while ensuring quality

  • Interfaces with other departments and management to communicate status of projects, engineering change requests, and quality concerns

  • Leads a Patent committee with leaders across the organization

  • Oversee all aspects of design from writing of the product performance specifications to test plans and implementation of the product into production

  • Plans, directs, supervises, and evaluates the work activities of Product Engineers, Sustaining Engineers, and Quality team members

  • Provides guidance and coordinates engineering projects and programs to ensure that project staff completes assigned project requirements on time and budget

  • Responsible to the review and disposition of non-conforming material, control plan development, and the optimization of process controls, including SPC

  • Works with the appropriate internal parties and/or Patent Attorney to determine patent feasibility and provide necessary documentation

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Demonstrates ability to take product design from concept to launch

  • Displays strong problem-solving skills using root cause analysis methods

  • Defines scope of work and accurately estimates required effort and time

  • Actively leads a team and looks for ways to be proactive solve design challenges

  • Experienced in leading multi-department teams and other engineers

  • Has experience working with contractors, outside service providers, and vendors

  • Meets deadlines and can motivate a team toward achieving its goal

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Engineering with 7+ years’ experience with a combination of management and product engineering

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in automotive quality assurance (familiar with APQP, PFMEA, SPC, MSA, & PPAP)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Requires use of hands and arms at least 90% of the time

  • Majority of the time is spent sitting

  • Lifting requirements are generally less than 10 lbs.

  • Manual lifting could reach the company maximum of 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Climate-controlled office environment

  • Able to visit customer site for troubleshooting design

  • Noise exposure is moderate

MENTAL/VISUAL DEMANDS:

  • Close vision and the ability to adjust focus are required to perform the job functions

  • Peripheral vision is required for safety
