SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

The Product Engineer 3 is responsible for the research and development of new technologies associated to new product development (Class 1, 2 & 3 projects), including design, validation and commercialization of assemblies and components related to NPD projects.

REPORTING TO : Director of Engineering

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for researching new materials and technologies that can be applied to the product portfolio to develop new products that fall into class 1, 2 & 3 of the NPD project definitions.

  • Knowledgeable of 3 different product lines and the mechanisms that allow the product to work correctly. Subject matter expert on 1 of the product lines.

  • Creation of complex 3D models and 2D prints for components and full assemblies in Solidworks including performing FEA.

  • Lead design reviews utilizing an established toolbox of design review tools for compliance to engineering principles/standards and manufacturability. As well as participating and providing constructive feedback on other team member’s product designs.

  • Perform analysis on competitive products to establish benchmarks for industry standards.

  • Work cross functionally with sales and product management to help turn identified customer product requirements into technical requirements for a new product.

  • Works with project teams to estimate define the scope of new product projects including timelines, costs, regulations requirements, BOM’s, test plans and prototyping throughout the NPD process.

  • Works closely with Quality and Manufacturing Engineers for product launches and revisions to existing products. Also, aides in evaluation of parts/products when quality issues arise with both suppliers and customers.

  • Help sourcing find and qualify new suppliers as well as working independently to find prototype shops to obtain parts for prototype builds.

  • Conducting prototype builds and aiding in manufacturing pilot builds. Including providing input into work instructions for the manufacturing lines.

  • Maintains accurate files in accordance with applicable company processes and IATF/TS/ISO standards.

  • Develop test plans and execute the plan to validate the design and determine product specifications.

  • Able to specify electrical components for new applications and generate wiring schematics to incorporate in the product design.

  • Load new components and BOM’s into the ERP system.

  • Manages outsourced design partners related to active projects.

  • Able to conduct searches to determine patentability of new designs and/or possible infringements. Works with the Director of Engineering and/or Patent Attorney to determine patent feasibility and provide necessary documentation.

  • Participates and/or lead continuous improvement projects by looking at ways to improve daily tasks, presenting problems and possible solutions to the appropriate teams.

  • Completes all other duties as assigned by the Director of Engineering.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND REQUIRED ABILITIES:

  • Experience with SolidWorks and EPDM on a network environment, FEA and simulation is a strong plus.

  • Good organizational skills, able to balance work between multiple projects.

  • Advanced mechanical understanding is required.

  • Electrical background (automation, familiarity with industrial controllers and controller programming) is a strong plus.

  • The ability to visualize problems and solutions.

  • Strong analytical capabilities with ability to apply complex mathematical concepts to calculate static and dynamic forces and strength of components

  • The ability to gather data and analyze the data creating actionable paths forward.

  • The ability to develop test plans and carry out the plans to validate designs.

  • Knowledge of Project Management software and MS Office software.

  • Knowledge of Continuous improvement processes and facilitation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

3-10 years of Mechanical Engineering experience designing mechanical components, assemblies, and/or new product development.

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent from an accredited university.

Physical Demands:

  • Requires use of hands and arms at least 90% of the time.

  • Majority of the time is spent sitting.

  • Lifting requirements are generally less than 10 lbs. Manual lifting could reach the company maximum of 50 lbs.

  • Working with tools and machinery to build and troubleshoot new products.

Work Environment:

  • Climate-controlled office environment.

  • The employee will occasionally visit customer site for troubleshooting design.

  • Noise exposure is moderate.

Mental/Visual Demands:

  • Close vision and the ability to adjust focus are required to perform the job functions.

  • Peripheral vision is required for safety.

COMPENSATION

  • The estimated compensation for this position is $60,000 - $110,000 per year

  • This position may be eligible for a business unit bonus of 5% annually

  • This position is also eligible for our comprehensive U.S. benefit offerings, which include Health benefits, 401(k) retirement savings program with company match, at least 80 hours of vacation, along with holiday, sick and personal time off.
