IDEX Product Engineering Manager in Denver, Colorado

The Engineering Manager oversees all product development related programs while managing the team in best practices for product design, design reviews / risk mitigation, and general problem-solving techniques for NPD, VAVE, and general product life cycle management. Develops and maintains product engineering KPI’s that help drive continuous improvement to processes like NPD stage gate, ECR/ECN, and the technology roadmap.


  • Manage a multi-disciplined product engineering team to ensure BAND-IT’s adherence to the established NPD stagegate process. Evaluate lessons learned from various projects and make recommendations to the process to ensure a streamlined flow throughout the process

  • Evaluate the product engineering team’s capabilities, identify gaps and develop plans to increase the teams capabilities to properly support the business and project pipeline.

  • Represents the product engineering department in the management teams cross-functional team meetings helping promote a one team approach to Band-It cross functional management.

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate design reviews with a cross functional team using product development tools like DFMA, DFMEA and PFMEA.

  • Understands the patent process and able to develop a patent strategy for a new product. Identifying possible areas of infringement and/or patentability and working with the design/product management teams to vet out a go forward strategy.

  • Heads cross functional teams in Rapid Improvement Events (RIE’s) or Just Do It (JDI) events for processes related to or adjacent to processes commonly used by the product engineering team.

  • Heads the team to appropriately validate a product or sub-system with a high level of confidence with minimal iterations to maintain speed to market.

  • Develops an annual budget for product development within Band-It, accounting for all development related costs associated with prototyping, outsourcing, resource allocation, tooling, etc.

  • Managerial responsibility for the product engineering department (Including training and development, goal deployment, resource management and monitoring of progress to targets)

  • Works on product or technology development projects to help the teams achieve their targets for scope, cost and timing.

  • Other tasks as assigned by the Director of Engineering.

  • Proven ability to apply and teach product development tools and concepts: FMEA’s, DFMA, Root Cause Methodology, Stage-gate processes, APQP, FEA, HALT, and DVP&R.

  • Managerial and interpersonal Skills, ability to build working relationships with all managers within Band-It.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across the business / operations functions

  • Computer literate (MS Office, SolidWorks, SolidWorks simulation, Minitab/JMP, or other testing related software)

  • Working knowledge of statistical process control (SPC), methodology and interpretation of SPC

  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including conveying technical subject matter to non-technical teams.

  • Ability to make presentations before management groups.

  • Advanced problem-solving skills

  • Working knowledge of 80/20 principals.


  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or similar field. 8+ years relevant Engineering experience; 3-5 years supervisory experience.

  • Ability to supervise a test team responsible for product life cycle management for the business.

Physical Demands:

  • Approximately 10% of the time will be spent in the engineering lab.

  • Approximately 10% of the time is spent bending and crouching.

  • Requires use of hands and arms at least 80% of the time.

  • Lifting requirements are generally less than 10 lbs. Occasionally lifting could reach the company maximum of 65 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • Time is primarily spent in a climate-controlled office, with the balance in a production environment.

  • Noise exposure is light to moderate.

Mental/Visual Demands:

  • Close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are necessary to perform the job functions.

  • Peripheral vision is required for safety.


To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Problem solving: Utilize 8D techniques (5Y’s, IS/IS NOT, Ishikawa, Lessons Learnt, FMEA) to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner with the ability to gather and analyze information from multiple sources with the ability to make timely judgements based on such information.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Build effective and sustainable professional relationships at all levels (executive level, customers, suppliers, peers, direct reports, shop floor).

  • Relationships with Others: Work effectively and relate well with others including managers, colleagues, and others inside and outside the Company. The employee exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others and works, to maintain constructive working relationships.

  • Communication and Contact: Communicate at all levels (Executive Level, Customers, Suppliers, Peers, Direct Reports, shop floor) both verbally and written. Maintaining and open mind and a willingness to listen and restructure their communications in response to other ideas.

  • Planning/organizing: Prioritize and plan work activities, use time efficiently and develop realistic action plans and can flex plans to compensate with unforeseen issues.

  • Quality control: Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness and monitor own work to ensure quality.

  • Adaptability: Adapt to changes in the work environment, manages conflicting demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.

  • Dependability: Consistently at work and on time, follows instructions, responds to management direction and solicits feedback to improve performance.

• The estimated compensation for this position is $100,000 - $135,000 per year

• This position may be eligible for a business unit bonus of 3% annually
