POSITION OVERVIEW AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
IDEX Health & Science designs, develops, and manufactures optimized life science original equipment manufacturer (OEM) fluidic systems and precision components. The RD&E team is responsible for exploring new technologies, developing new market-based product lines, and executing custom fluidic solutions. Creating innovative solutions for our customers’ increasingly complex instruments directly contributes to improved diagnoses and treatments, and thus, we help improve health outcomes and people’s lives.
The team seeks to fill a salaried position as Engineering Lab Technologist, located in Rohnert Park, California. The Engineering Lab Technologist's mission is to manage and execute tasks that support concept development, prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting for existing and new products. The Engineering Lab Technologist is an experienced professional who independently manages and executes tasks to evaluate new concepts, build prototypes, and conduct thorough analysis and testing. This person can take a problem, make a plan, and go execute. The role will be a “hands-on” expert of IDEX products and other fluidic components and test methods. The person in this role has a diverse background - exposed to different facets of manufacturing, engineering disciplines and lab work. Creativity, a "not afraid to fail" attitude, and a good eye for detail in spotting "differences" are other abilities. This person has a history of jumping in to start/try things, voicing the unpopular or difficult topics, and "fixing or building stuff."
The RD&E team is geographically distributed among several sites. This role will receive guidance for work priorities and have support for challenges and questions. The person filling this role will have high autonomy, but she or he must be comfortable working afar from direct supervision and be driven, organized, and practice personal accountability.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Develop test methods, test procedures, and initial work instructions
Systematic documentation of experiments, data, results, and prototype builds
Conduct testing and prototype builds for learning, product and process development, benchmarking, and performance verification
Applies basic geometry, algebra, and statistics to aid in analysis and decision-making
Use of metrology tools for early analysis and specification development
Able to troubleshoot issues and identify potential challenges/issues
Can work independently, but communicates insights to the team and escalates issues in a timely manner through proper communication chains
Organization - to balance task work, manage priorities, and maintain task completion goals
Maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies
Desire to develop “hands-on” expertise on relevant IDEX Health & Science products, enabling personal growth and exploration of new concepts to contribute to our innovation goals and entrepreneurial spirit
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Associate Degree (two year) in a technical discipline or HS Diploma/GED and ten or more years of relevant Life Science or laboratory work experience
Demonstrated “hands-on” electromechanical aptitude – for prototyping, building test fixtures and setup/use of equipment
Previous experience conducting testing and use of the scientific method
Able to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways
Demonstrated proficiency in using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general computer skills (Windows-based software)
Skill in technical writing to create test plans/procedures, work instructions, data summaries, and test reports
Clear communication of test results and experimental findings to core team members and customers
A proven self-starter with the ability to work independently, owning project assignments, while supporting a culture of accountability, team orientation, and successful outcomes
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience with data analysis and basic statistics
Familiarity with PCBs and the ability to program/run LabView, Python software or other programming language
Familiarity with metrology systems like Zygo Zegage, Keyence VHX, Zeiss Stemi 2000-C
Background knowledge or exposure to precision machining processes, injection molding, and/or extrusion of polymers
A candidate with basic design and/or CAD skills
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Able to move in a laboratory, operate various types of equipment and tools, perform experiments, build prototypes, and complete work at a desk
Limited travel (<5%), but must be able to travel via plane/car/bus/train as required
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and move within an office complex, laboratory, manufacturing floor and outside in the field
Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and visual acuity for reading a computer screen and handwritten/typewritten documents, and experiment observation
Speaking and hearing ability for telephone, video conferencing, and in-person communications.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in non-standardized situations
