Job Title : Sr. Product Development Engineer

Location: Rohnert Park, CA

The IDEX Health & Science Analytical Instrument group is looking for a talented individual to help develop our next generation of fluidic tools for the Analytical Instrument (AI) market. This key role requires an innovative thinker who is a collaborative researcher, productive experimenter, and project leader that will uncover advanced solutions to our market’s needs.

Our Analytical Instrument – Mass Spectrometry Systems team develops hardware to support Mass Spectrometry, Chromatography, and all related analytical fields; we are one of the world’s top suppliers to these markets. The Sr. Product Development Engineer will bolster our significant footprint in these areas as we develop innovative solutions.

This role will report to the Mass Spectrometry Systems Engineering Manager. Under minimal supervision, manages assigned projects to meet product technical goals. Assume technical responsibility for a wide range of projects from fast-turn line extension release to long-term new product development from requirements definition to production release. Apply sound engineering judgment and leadership in evaluating and applying various mechanical, materials and fluidic technologies to result in products recognized by customers as superior in function and performance. Work well with diverse development team and able to have fun at the same time. Exercise independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation of results. Make data driven decisions with a keen attention to detail. The position will lead projects and interact directly with customers, inside/outside Sales, Production, QA and Manufacturing Engineering personnel and personnel in other departments in order to solve problems.

The primary functions of the position will include:

  • Inventing/creating novel product designs via integration of components to form sub-systems and systems.

  • Utilization of SolidWorks or other related 3D CAD systems. Analyze designs using FEA, CFD, and motion simulations.

  • Working closely with analytical instrument manufacturers to understand application needs to develop product designs, provide technical support, and communicate project timelines.

  • Managing new product and technology development projects using established procedures and tools.

  • Working with the Product Managers to identify evolving trends in the industry and vet ideas for new product and technology developments.

  • Identifying and developing opportunities for intellectual property protection of novel inventions.

  • Designing experiments to evaluate product performance relative to design specifications and customer expectations.

Required Qualifications/Attributes:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or relevant science discipline

  • Experience with 3D CAD systems (i.e. Solidworks) required

  • Life science industry experience is preferred

  • Entrepreneurial mindset for developing new opportunities

  • Proven self-starter and ability to successfully work independently and on a distributed team

  • Excellent organization and time management skills

  • Proven strength in oral and written communication skills; Prior experience in preparing and delivering technical documentations and presentations

  • Operational/design experience utilizing IH&S components/systems that enable scientific discovery

  • Fluent with documentation tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel

  • Willingness to travel up to 20%
