Senior Product Development Engineer
Rohnert Park, CA
IDEX Health & Science is seeking a talented and experienced Engineer to join its product development team in Rohnert Park, California. IDEX designs, develops, and manufactures OEM fluidic systems and precision components. By creating innovative solutions for our customers’ increasingly complex instrumentation needs, IDEX directly contributes to the science and healthcare industries that improve our quality of life.
The position’s primary responsibility is the development and optimization of fluidic product solutions for OEM instrumentation needs in the Biotech and In Vitro Diagnostics markets. This role works to understand customer application challenges, extract and define product requirements, develop concepts, and create specifications for products that address customers’ needs. The Product Development Engineer utilizes mechanical engineering knowledge, problem-solving skills, and project management to drive projects through the product development process – from concept, to design, and through production scale-up.
Analyzes designs for appropriate tolerances and design for manufacture
Applies engineering theories, tools and research techniques to solve technical challenges
Attends relevant trade shows and assists in the preparation of product demonstrations and substantiation of marketing claims
Communicates clearly and effectively with internal and external functional teams – orally, in written form, and via presentations
Develops expertise on relevant IH&S technologies and products; investigates and remains current on new technology to generate new product ideas
Executes design creation, concept prototypes, cost analysis, and performance verification
Leads the technical efforts for new product development projects
Manages project work using established processes and project management tools
Remains flexible to support other functions as needed
Supports investigation, analysis, and problem-solving of complex quality items
Works closely with manufacturing to ensure assembly and test documentation is clear, accurate and complete
Works with product managers, sales, and customers to define new product requirements
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar degree
Demonstrated experience of interfacing with external customers and outside suppliers/vendors (at least three years’ experience)
Proven ability to design precision mechanical components and assemblies (highly proficient in GD&T)
Ideal candidate will come from fluidics-related/ precision-molded engineering
Will understand ‘tight tolerances’
Highly proficient in using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) to create detailed models and drawings.
Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques preferred
Experience applying mathematical and computational analysis to solve engineering problems, including use of modeling tools such as FEA, CFD, etc.
Experience with electro-mechanical devices and test equipment (fluid control devices such as valves, pumps, sensors are preferred)
Experience participating in Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
Demonstrated ability to lead small teams, complete tasks and effectively manage time to meet deadlines
Proficiency in the use of business software tools (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint) and a proven ability to quickly learn and use new software tools
An established self-starter with the ability to work independently while supporting a culture of accountability, team orientation and a focus on successful outcomes
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
General office area, engineering laboratory, and manufacturing facility
Able to operate various types of test equipment and tools, perform experiments, build prototypes and complete work at a desk
Able to travel (<10%) via plane/car/bus/train as required, domestic and international, and is comfortable traveling to locations where customs and cultures are unfamiliar
Ability to lift to 10 pounds, move within an office complex and outside in the field
Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and visual acuity for reading a computer screen and handwritten/typewritten documents, and experiment observation
Operates under limited supervision from Engineering Manager, communicates to remote sites, and interfaces within Engineering and all other departments.
