The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the mechanical design and validation of high precision opto-mechanical systems. As part of the RD&E team, this position will work with members of the mechanical, optical and manufacturing engineering groups to provide mechanical feedback at all stages of the design and manufacturing process. Key responsibilities will include establishing the mechanical architecture of new system designs and ensuring all sub-modules comply with the overall system-level tolerances necessary to meet system performance specifications. In addition to performance and reliability, emphasis will also be placed on DFC and DFM efforts throughout the design process. Support for these systems will extend throughout the prototype phase and include migration to the manufacturing team.


  • Lead engineering efforts pertaining to the design of precision opto-mechanical systems.

  • e with optical designers to provide feedback on mechanical viability of designs.

  • Fluently utilize mechanical CAD software such as SolidWorks.

  • Analyze and assign mechanical tolerances, incorporating manufacturing and optical considerations.

  • Completing DFMEA’s and implementing DFM and DFC principles.

  • Generate complete engineering fabrication documentation & bill of materials.

  • Support mechanical designs through manufacturing, assembly and test.

  • Work with assembly and test technicians to develop and debug procedures.

  • Communicate effectively through email, presentations and technical documents.


  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of significant hands on experience and education. Advanced degree is considered a plus.

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field.

  • 5+ years experience leading engineering design and/or manufacturing initiatives.

  • Excellent CAD skills required. Solidworks experience preferred.

  • Working knowledge of GD&T per ISO standards.

  • Hands-on experience with opto-mechanical system design and alignment.

  • Familiarity with kinematic mounting schemes and exact constraint principles.

  • Working knowledge of FEA (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, etc.).

  • Understanding of basic machining and fabrication processes.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks both of similar and varying priority.

  • Creation of technical reports and presentations.
