SUMMARY

This position is responsible for developing, organizing, and executing all engineering (new product development and sustaining engineering) activities for the business. This includes setting strategic and tactical engineering objectives, directing new product development, developing product and technology roadmaps, leading and developing the engineering team, and managing engineering resources.

This key member of the leadership team will significantly influence the long-term technical direction and technology vision of the business unit by his/her ability to effectively analyze and redirect resources through engineering and product development that effectively meet or exceed the requirements of both internal and external customers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership, Talent, and Team Development

  • Provide leadership to the organization and support to the senior staff on strategic, cross-functional, and change initiatives

  • Set both long and short range goals and hold engineering team accountable

  • Structure, manage, and mentor the engineering team to achieve optimal performance

  • Conducts performance appraisals with the engineering team on an annual basis, setting goals and objectives, completes regular feedback sessions, reviews training and develops team

  • Meets or exceeds product development and engineering targets. Must deliver results

  • Support all other departments, vendors, distributors and customers

  • Responsible for delivering business results to the corporation

Strategic Development

  • Develop Strategic and Tactical plans in pursuit of growth and profitable objectives

  • Prioritize new product opportunities and recommends development plans

  • Work with process owners to ensure that the KPIs are collected to monitor progress

  • Use 8020 methodology to eliminate unnecessary product complexity to drive profitability and to achieve product growth

New Product Development

  • Create, define, and lead the implementation of technology and product platform roadmaps

  • Utilize a defined, toll-gate NPD process to manage and lead new product research, design, prototyping, and development

  • Manage product development and coordinate product development activities with Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain, and Operations to ensure product requirements meet VOC (voice of customer) requirements and can be effectively launched

  • Create technical budgets, allocate resources, and project manage schedules of product releases and/ or project deadlines

  • Maintain and drive key engineering metrics including new product development as a percentage of sales

Manufacturing Support / Sustaining Engineering

  • Support manufacturing and procurement objectives focused on Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost

  • Support cost- reduction, quality improvement, and/or efficiency projects

  • Oversees all product modification and improvement activities with strategic objectives in mind

  • Ensure all designs are in alignment with Operations and Sourcing goals and capabilities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND REQUIRED ABILITIES

  • An in-depth understanding of engineering principles, practices, procedures, and the ability to exercise independent judgment within established systems and procedures.

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to translate complex situations into information that will support the profitability and growth of the business.

  • Proven management/supervisory skills, including the ability to challenge employees with multiple technical disciplines to achieve excellence by thinking differently to create alternative design solutions.

  • Customer focused and customer driven. Requires experience in mining and validating Voice of Customer (VOC) data to identify and support the needs of external customers.

  • Demonstrated organizational abilities and excellent project management leadership expertise. Outstanding oral and written communication skills, which include active listening.

  • A high energy, results-oriented manager who is not afraid to take charge and serve on cross-functional teams.

  • A strategic thinker/problem solver who can effectively interface with all levels of employees. An ability to analyze the details, but also to be able to step back and "look at the big picture."

  • The ability to cope effectively in an environment of change. Makes good decisions in a timely fashion, often with incomplete information and under tight deadlines.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • BS degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or comparable). Masters Degree in Engineering or MBA preferred

  • A minimum of 7-10 years of demonstrated success in an engineered product manufacturing operation, including significant management experience and excellent technology assessment capabilities.

  • Experience in Semiconductor Equipment Industry preferred

  • Experience in a process focused organization (Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Value Streams).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Must have a proven track record, demonstrated by a progressive level of growth in responsibility.

  • Expertise in working with business reorganizations and globalization initiatives, including acquisition analysis/due diligence, preferred.
